The EA has always been a multidisciplinary role, but as it evolves, it gets ever more complex.
Administrative, operational, strategic, digital, governance, analytical, leadership. All in one job title that the world still thinks is basic.
What you are being asked to do today is broader and more complex than at any other point in the profession’s history. You are navigating systems, tools, compliance, business priorities, personalities, data, politics, risk and rapid change. You are expected to understand the organisation, anticipate consequences, absorb pressure, translate nuance and keep your executive moving. And you are doing it in real time.
If you have been feeling stretched, it is not because you are not capable. It is because the scope has expanded and the expectations have multiplied. You are carrying administrative work, operational support, project responsibilities, strategic partnership, digital confidence, data fluency, governance awareness, relationship management and leadership presence. That is a multidisciplinary role. A serious one.
So let me say this from the bottom of my heart.
You are not behind. You are evolving. The profession is evolving. The world is asking for more breadth, more depth and more clarity of judgement. You are stepping into work that draws on every part of you and it deserves recognition, support and proper development.
This is the moment to invest in your skills, your confidence and your voice. The multidisciplinary assistant is not the assistant of the past. You are the future of business operations and organisational continuity.
And you deserve to be seen for all of it.
