“Words Are Powerful, Mum.”

Administrative Profession Culture & Events Strategic Business Partner July 24, 2025

“Words are powerful, Mum. That’s why it’s called spelling. People used to think saying something out loud cast a spell.”
– My son, casually dropping wisdom at the dinner table.

And you know what? He’s not wrong.

The word spell comes from Old English, meaning to tell a story or speak aloud with intention.
Back then, to “cast a spell” was to use language to shape the world.

It still is.

Every day, I meet assistants holding back what they really want to say.
Smart, capable professionals who stay silent, because they don’t feel senior enough, strategic enough, or confident enough.

But can I remind you

✨ You are a Subject Matter Expert in administration
✨ You understand workflows, bottlenecks, and relationships in ways others don’t
✨ You see the nuance, the energy, the unspoken dynamics in every room

That perspective is rare.
And it matters.

The moment you understand that you are not just “support” but a strategic partner – someone with deep insight into operations, influence, and execution – is the moment your voice becomes your power.

And here’s the thing.
When you speak up, you can ‘cast a spell’.
You change minds. You shift direction. You move things forward.
Outside of your comfort zone is where the magic happens.

You don’t have to be the loudest voice.
But don’t underestimate the impact of being the new voice – the one that sees what no one else sees.

Your words carry weight.
Use them.
