The Missing Piece: Why EAs Must Be on the Org Chart

Administrative Profession Culture & Events Strategic Business Partner February 24, 2025

It’s one of the things that sets my teeth on edge when I am beginning a restructure.

All too often, administrative professionals are left off the official org chart entirely. Or the business hasn’t thought through where they sit. I’ve seen structures where assistants are lumped in with the cleaners and drivers. And receptionists sitting alongside EAs to the CEO because there is no distinction between administrative professionals that work at different levels.

This is not just a slight oversight. Visibility and recognition matter.

When assistants are not represented properly on the org chart, it sends a message to the rest of the business that their role is less important or less integral to the team’s success.

This perception can lead to a lack of acknowledgment and appreciation for what an assistant does. Without visibility, their contributions often go unnoticed, and their efforts underappreciated.

Inclusion means recognizing every team member’s role and contribution and every member of staff should be on the org chart.

But not including them or getting the positioning wrong, suggests their role is somehow less important or that they don’t contribute in the same way as everyone else. And by extension, this means they are less entitled to the things other employees take for granted; training, clear career progression, and performance review for example.

Being left off can feel demeaning and demotivating. It overlooks their business contributions and undermines their professional identity. This lack of visibility can significantly impact their career progression, access to opportunities, and overall job satisfaction. Being included properly on the org chart validates their role and opens doors to professional growth and development.

If we’re going to change the narrative, it’s time to thoughtfully include administrative professionals and their career path on the org chart. It is a simple yet powerful way to show respect and acknowledge their essential contributions at every level. It helps reshape perceptions, fosters a culture of inclusion, and highlights the true value that assistants bring to the organization.
